INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

Hex Bed

The Hex Bed was an experiment in utilizing my digital skills to design and plan a sculptural object that was entirely built with traditional wood working methods. It also provided an opportunity to create a project with a close friend of mine who is studying boutique wood working. A custom build that incorporates the functionality multiple pieces of bedroom furniture into one, including side tables, drawers, and a large storage area. From a material standpoint it utilizes a unique mixture of Walnut, Cherry, and Purple Heart.

PROCESS DOCUMENTATION

Designed and built for a family friend, this bed was truly an undertaking. In order to meet deadlines there were multiple 100 hour weeks put into this project.

The design stage incorporated various platform bed and head boards as inspiration and turned into a truly unique piece. Congruent and aligned geometrical lines are featured in multiple different locations on the bed frame. Features and functionality of separate bedroom pieces are integrated into this standalone piece. Standard bed hardware was utilized in order to create a robust piece of furniture that will last multiple generations, and one that is easily movable.

Built from the ground up using raw materials from a local lumberyard. Additional techniques including milling, jointing, planing, laminating, drilling, routing, joining, veneering, sanding, and finishing.
